How to See What Competitors Spend on Google Ads
You see who bids against you. You do not see what they spend. Every figure you find for a rival’s budget is an estimate, so the useful skill is knowing what each source shows and how far to trust it.
Can you see how much competitors spend on Google Ads?
No, not their real figure. Only the advertiser and Google hold it. What you can get is evidence of who is active, and estimates of how much they spend.
How do you check a competitor’s Google Ads budget?
Start with the free sources, and be clear about what each one answers:
- Auction insights report. In your own account, this shows who appears in your auctions and how often, on measures such as impression share and overlap rate. It tells you who is pushing, and it shows no spend.
- Keyword Planner. This gives a range for top-of-page bids on a search, and a rough size for the search. It tells you what advertisers tend to bid, and not what any one of them spends.
- Competitor spend tools. Paid tools publish an estimated monthly figure for a domain, and they work from outside the account.
How do I see what Google Ads my competitors are running?
Use Google’s Ads Transparency Center. Search an advertiser’s name or domain and you can read the ads it has run. Treat it as a record of ads, and not of budgets.
Why are competitor ad spend estimates wrong?
In our view, they miss because most of the inputs are worked out from the outside:
- Sampling. A tool typically sees only the searches it checks, in the places and on the days it checks them.
- Assumed prices. It does not know what a rival paid for a click, since that sits in the rival’s own account.
- Your market may be thin. Expect less data outside the largest markets and languages.
A quick test tells you a lot: look your own domain up in the tool, and compare it with what you really spent.
How should you read a competitor spend estimate?
Ask two questions of any figure, whichever tool it comes from.
What is its range? A single number invites a decision it cannot carry. On Vickrey’s made-up sample airline, a rival reads about 1,031 USD a day, range 991 to 1,071. A narrow range and a wide one call for different decisions, and a single number hides which one you have.
What is its date? Figures from an ad account arrive on their own schedule. A chart that does not say when its data stops lets last week’s picture pass for today’s.
Then look at direction before size. In our experience, whether a rival moved, and when, is often more useful than the exact amount.
What should you do when the data cannot answer?
Say so. A rival may show too rarely, or a report may not have arrived. The honest move is to mark the gap in words, rather than fill it with a line that looks like the rest.
How does Vickrey estimate rival spend?
Vickrey reads rivals from your own account, so it starts from your own auctions. Every rival figure is an estimate and carries its range and date. Your own spend comes straight from Google Ads and carries no range. Accuracy results, with their error, will be published here as pilots complete, and until then this blog carries no accuracy figure.
